Choose the town before the hotel. Yes, we know, the pool photos are calling. Ignore them for five minutes. Your base decides whether the trip feels easy, lively, quiet or like a daily negotiation with a train timetable.
Nice
It may not win every beauty contest. It keeps winning when you look at the train map.
Villefranche & Cap-Ferrat
The bay does the seducing. The timetable asks for a little more attention.
Antibes
Old town, proper beach, less theatre than Cannes.
Cannes
Beaches and hotels delivered with a straighter face.
Monaco
Palace, harbour and museums: very easy to visit, a much more particular choice as a base.
Menton
Gardens, colour and a softer eastern pace, with Italy almost within touching distance.
